Richard Todd & Joan Rice

To celebrate the most romantic day of the year, Valentine’s Day, I have posted one of my favourite stills from Walt Disney’s Story of Robin Hood (1952). Above is Richard Todd as Robin Hood and Joan Rice as Maid Marian in a passionate pose to promote the live-action movie. I think you will agree that it’s quite a steamy shot for a Disney film!

I have not seen this publicity still before and it is indeed very intense. Playing the part of Robin Hood it would have been impossible NOT to have fallen in love with Joan Rice I think at that time. She was very beautiful and remains my favourite actress to this day.

This has got to be one of my favourite stills from the movie. I was amazed when I first saw it as I thought it was rather steamy for a Disney movie, particularly at that time.

There is a similar one in the Picture Gallery of Joan and Richard here:

Cant help feeling how lucky Richard Todd was at this stage. Walt Disney had cast him as Robin Hood - and paid him very well for that - so that he could spend four of five months in Burnham Beeches and at Denham Film Studios and having to be involved in such scenes as this with Joan Rice. Talk about all your Christmases coming at once !! I think that would be an understatement.
