A Rare Treat Tomorrow!

One of the most underrated films of all time will be shown on British television tomorrow, Monday 18th October on Channel 4 at 1.15 pm. It was Walt Disney’s second live-action movie in this country, using RKO’s frozen profits after the War and has been described at the best British Technicolor film ever made. Disney’s ‘Story of Robin Hood and his Merrie Men’ (1952) uses a whole multitude of emerging talent behind, and in front of the camera, including stars like Richard Todd, Joan Rice, Peter Finch, James Robertson Justice, Hubert Gregg, James Hayter, Patrick Barr, Elton Hayes and Martitia Hunt. Please let me know what you think of it!

Have set my computer to record it. Not seen it since it was shown (regularly) in the early 70's on Saturday morning tv when I was a kid.

I noticed when I was shopping in Sainsburys a week ago (UK supermarket chain for those that don't live in the UK) they had the Errol Flynn movie on sale for about £4 on DVD. Looked for the Disney movie but it wasn't there.

Albie, Disney's Story of Robin Hood (1952) is only available on DVD in the United States. Apparantly it is quite a basic package with rather poor picture quality, which is such a shame.

Hopefully one day it will be released everywhere, digitalised to its pristine best, with all the extras including Disney's 'Riddle of Robin Hood' documentary. We live in hope!

Just finished watching the movie after what must be a 35 year gap! Really enjoyed it, what I would call a 'merrie romp'. Even 'un-restored' the colours are still reasonably vivid but the sound track lets it down more than the picture quality. This could do with being digitised and enhanced to make it ready for release on DVD over here.

You can get the US version of the DVD on Amazon UK for £9 but you need a multi-region DVD player as it is region 1 whereas most European players are set for region 2.
