Who Was Your Favourite Robin Hood?

This is the result of a poll that I have had sitting on my blog for a couple of years now. As Russell Crowe is now a contender, since the release of his new film, I thought I would finally remove it and perhaps run a similar poll in the future. What do you think of the final outcome?

The leader is Richard Todd, quite right too, i think though that Michael Pread should have been right there just behind Richard Todd, Michael was a very good Robin, in the excelent serise Robin of Sherwood, which easily outshone the recent BBC series even Jason Conery was very good in the part. perhaps if this were re-run these actors might get more votes.

Yes I loved the Robin of Sherwood series, Mike. I hope to get the box set someday!

I was surprised Erroll Flynn didn't get more votes, as most people consider him the archetypical Robin Hood.

Its safe to assume that Richard Todd would be the winner on this site - mind you he gets my vote every time in this role. It does irritate me when Robin Hood films are mentioned in the press - as with the recent new release -although a number of other films are mentioned The Story of Robin Hood seldom is. Errol Flynn is certainly the best remembered though and in the swashbuckling roles he played at that time, there has never been an actor who quite fitted as he did. Richard Todd, of course, played a number of these costume parts and was very good in them - he did seem to enjoy them. Another one to remember would be Richard Greene who is the TV Robin Hood most remembered I would have said in a series that was shown worldwide - probably the first British TV series to do this

I'm surprised you didn't include Patrick Bergin in the poll. I was also surprised Flynn didn't get more votes. It's hard to pick a favorite Robin Hood anymore. Surprisingly enough Crowe may not be included in my favorites although I thought he was very good in the part. Besides Flynn, Bergin and Praed are some of my favorites.

Yes Neil, we are a bit biased on here and it’s no surprise Toddy got the most votes!

But below him I thought it was interesting to see Jonas Armstrong get more votes than Richard Greene and poor Errol Flynn only reach third place.

Nice to hear from you again WoodsyLadyM, have seen the Russell Crowe Robin Hood film? If you have I’d be interested to know what you thought of it.

Yes I could- and should- have included Patrick Bergin in my list-another very good and underrated Robin Hood movie. Also I missed out Sean Connery DOH! I will have to make a more comprehensive poll next time.

I'll just cut and paste what I posted at the Blue Boar Inn.:

OK, it's not the greatest Robin Hood movie but it was still damn good. My only problem is it left me wanting more. The movie went by too quickly. It's Ridley Scott's version of Robin Hood's origin and now I'm waiting for the sequel. I loved Cate Blanchett as the unsentimental Lady Marian. The acting in general was excellent. The last battle though was a bit of a disappointment and anticlimactic. This movie is really just Part 1 of Scott's version of the RH saga.

Although I love Russell Crowe, I thought his Robin was too subdued. I suppose it's a matter of expectations although I tried to go into the movie without having any. He did have an occasional twinkle in his eye, especially when he would say to Marian "Ask me nicely." But then again, I suppose Russell's performance is accurate for a weary and guilt-ridden veteran of the Crusades.

Thanks WoodsyLadyM.

I came away slightly disappointed, the story itself had some very good points, but I think overall it lacked a lot of the humour that has been a part of the Robin Hood legend.

As you say it is aimed towards a sequel that I hope Scott does get round to making, because I feel, in this case, it will probably be better. The characters will grow and Robin will be in the greenwood where he belongs - not leading armies.

I believe it's all a matter of our expectations. I tried to go in to see the movie without them, but those pesky things keep popping up anyway. I think a lot of reviewers went in with them and that's why some of the reviews have not been so good, but for better or worse we have them.

The humor was there but it was more dry and subtle. Like you I missed seeing Robin in the Greenwood. My favorite scenes in the movie are in the Greenwood when Robin and his men are doing what they do best, trying to rescue people or robbing those that have too much. I certainly hope we see a lot more of that in the sequel too.

It will be interesting to know who receives the most votes when you add Russell Crowe. If you do not mind I would like to post a link to your poll so that my Robin Hood fans can vote. As you know much of my followers are Richard Armitage fans (not Jonas Armstrong fans) and people that admire Native American actors, so it might send some voters your way.

You should also do a Lady Marian poll, that would indeed be interesting.

WoodsyLadyM said...

I liked Armitage so much more too. I did not like how Robin was written. Gisborne's character had so much potential. It's too bad that potential was squandered by the writers.

Having a poll on Lady Marian is a good idea. Just make sure to include Uma Thurman and Audrey Hepburn.

I will be creating a more detailed Robin Hood poll very soon.

Of course you can do a link, Avalon. More the Merrier!

Thank you all for your very interesting comments.
